ANCIENT GEOMANCY

• Geomancy is a method of divination whose etymological root originates from the Arabic ‘ilm ar-raml (the science of the sand), Carrying several mythological associations rooted in ancient mysticism this divinatory system is based upon the making and interpreting of markings in the sand, land and ether as a form of inquiry, indication and interpretation. In a way, it is a silent language through which the universe communicates with the awakened wise one.

• Inspired by this ancient art, Sabine Mirlesse pursued this subject with a history of revelatory objects and reimagined their forms and application. Referencing the oasis’s source, another word for eye, as a prime example of how we read the Earth, she could establish a connect between the seeking visitors, and the natural phenomena that surround us. And, thus pave out the way ahead towards the objective. And, that is how this art moves ahead till now.

• It is believed that Alexander the great used this art of wise guidance when embarking on the journey to conquer the world. It is also believed that Birbal, the wise and witty minister of emporer Akbar, was a master of the art of geomancy guidances and resolutions.

• Going by the evidences still available on land, it is safe to say that the ancient geomancy was practiced hugely through the form of landscaping mystical symbols and forms over large areas. The Mayan Civilization typically reflects these formations even today. Landscapings were typically carved out as guided by the wise men with an objective of manifesting a certain objectivefor a community or area as a whole besides using it for individual purposes.
